Make a Donation to the Wye Marsh

Every donation, no matter how large or small makes a difference to the Wye Marsh!

Become a Wye Marsh supporter today! Your contribution will help to provide year round programs for the public, students and other organizations to promote awareness, appreciation, understanding and enjoyment of the environment and wildlife resources.

You can become a Wye Marsh supporter through many ways. Adopt a Swan, a Wild Bird, or a Bird of Prey. You can acknowledge a friend or loved one through Tribute donations, with naming opportunities for Benches, Trees, Bird Feeder or a Plank on the boardwalk. These donations are great gift ideas to commemorate Birthdays, Anniversaries, Weddings and other special occasions.

Donating to the Wye Marsh can be accomplished easily through Monthly Giving. As a monthly donor, you help Wye Marsh with your continued support through out the year. Your gift will save time, money and resources, leaving more for achieving our mission. Become a supporter for as little as a $10 monthly donation and you will receive a token of appreciation – your choice of a Wye Marsh pin or crest. To become a Wye Marsh monthly supporter just click on this link Monthly Giving.

Memorial donations are a meaningful way of remembering a loved one and create a conservation legacy. Your thoughtfulness and support play a significant role in enabling the Wye Marsh to continue environmental and educational programs.

Donating Gifts of Securities

A gift of publicly-traded securities is an alternative way of making a donation to a charitable organization. Securities include: shares, bonds, warrants, mutual fund shares/units, and segregated fund units. It may be advantageous for you to make a charitable gift with these assets.

Donor benefits:
You will receive a charitable tax receipt for the full value of the securities donated
The donor is not subject to capital gains tax

The actual securities will be transferred to the Wye Marsh.  Please be advised that the gift does not qualify for the capital gains savings if the shares are sold and then the proceeds are donated.

Example: Mr. Smith is considering making a $90,000 donation to his favourite charity. He is in the top 43% and has enough income to be able to claim the full amount of the donation receipt in the year it is made.  He owns a segregated fund with the market value of $90,000 and an adjusted cost base of $40,000.  His capital gain on the contract is $50,000.

The first column shows what would happen if Mr. Smith liquidated the fund and then donated the cash to the Wye Marsh.  The second column illustrates what would happen if the segregated fund was donated to Wye Marsh instead. The end result shows that by donating the security rather than cash, Mr. Smith could save $10,750 on his tax return.

Charitable Gift Annuity

Life income gifts let you make a large donation now and retain the income from your gift. They are excellent tools for people who want to make a substantial gift, but also need to ensure they retain sufficient income for a comfortable retirement.

A charitable gift annuity is a life insurance product that allows you to make an immediate gift and receive income for life. You are guaranteed to receive a fixed payment for life or a specified term. The Wye Marsh receives the immediate gift.

Here's how it works.

You transfer funds to the Wye Marsh Living Legacy Plan. The Marsh will then buy an annuity to provide you with an income for life. If the donation is greater than what is needed for the life income, the excess is a charitable gift (tax credit). If the donation is less than is required for the life income, then no charitable gift and no tax credit. The life income paid to you is tax free forever.

An example: where an 80 year old male gives a gift of $60,000., the life expectancy is nine years, and the charity pays him $5,000.00 annually. The expected payout over the nine years ($5,000.00 x 9 = $45,000.00). The excess $15,000.00 ($60,000.00 - $45,000.00) is a charitable gift. The $5,000.00 annual income is received by the donor tax free forever and the donor gets a $15,000.00 tax receipt for a charitable giving tax credit.

A combination of an annuity and life insurance will ensure your estate is not depleted by the gift.

Many thanks to Cheryl Webb - Webb & Associates Financial Solutions, for her ideas on planned giving.
