Programs Grade Six to Eight
Grade Six
Diversify and Classify
Science & Technology: Life Systems: Diversity of Living Things
Half day program: Students will investigate and observe the distribution
of animal species in Wye Marsh through dip netting and pond viewers.
Students will be responsible for identifying and classifying the
invertebrates that they have discovered during their aquatic
investigation. Participants will demonstrate how to use an identification
key and focus on taxonomy through an interactive game and a pond
organism study.
Full day program: In addition to the half day program, students will get
the opportunity to see reptiles and amphibians during live reptile
presentation focusing on the characteristics of vertebrates. After
learning how to use a tree identification key, students will form teams
and participate in our “Great Tree Challenge” activity demonstrating
their knowledge of classification.
Birds of Prey and Flight
Science & Technology: Matter and Materials: Properties of Air and
Characteristics of Flight
Half day program: Here is a unique program that will get your students
talking! Students will have the opportunity to investigate the
characteristics, adaptations and identification of birds through a live
birds of prey presentation! The characteristics of flight will be described
through the live birds and through interactive activities. Finish off the
visit by investigating what bones can be discovered during an owl
pellet dissection!
Two People One Path
Heritage & Citizenship: New France
Full day program: Here is a great opportunity for students to experience
a half day at Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre and a half day at Sainte
Marie Among the Hurons. Students will follow in the footsteps of the
Wendat (Huron) and French explorers, to learn the skills that were
required to survive in the Wye Valley over three centuries ago. Trained
educators from both sites will guide you through the exciting history of
the Wye Valley through hands-on exploration and interactive games.
Sainte Marie is only a ten minute walk away!
Lessons from the Creators
Social Studies, History, Heritage and Citizenship, First Nations People & European Explorers, New France, Development of the Western World, Native studies, Expressing Aboriginal Cultures
Full day Program: This is an exciting opportunity for students to
visit both Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre and Martyr's Shrine.
Students will travel through the ages investigating the history of the
Canadian Martyr's and the systems of beliefs (the faith) they
brought to the Native Peoples of the Georgian Bay area. Through
telling the creation stories of the Wendat and Jesuit missionaries,
students will understand how perception influences culture and how
this history shaped Canada. Students will investigate the
characteristics of Canada's Native Peoples by studying how they
survived on these lands, their relationship with the environment,
attitudes towards European explorers, and the potential for conflict.
Through interactive games, participants will be challenged to
understand the economic and religious reasons for French
settlement, explore cultural differences, the concept of cultural
influence, and investigate the bias associated with history.
Healthy History
Health and Physical Education
Heritage and Citizenship: Aboriginal Peoples and European Explorers
Half day program: Students will be introduced to the differences in
diet between the Native Canadians, European Voyageurs, and
diets of today. Through exploring the marsh and forest plants
students will get an up close look at some of the edible wilds of the
area, and how the Wendat and French missionaries helped each
other to survive. An interactive game stressing the “Food as Fuel”
concept is played. Students will be equipped with pedometers
allowing them to track their steps in attempt to reach our activity
level goals.
*Optional: Canoeing can be included in this program

Grade Seven
Natural Resources
Geography: Natural Resources
Half day program: This program focuses on the distribution of wealth,
population densities, and the use of natural resources through a
challenging community resource game. Students will demonstrate an
understanding of how people use renewable and non-renewable
resources, and how human activity affects the environment. Interactive
and challenging activities will allow students to investigate conservation
and the concept of sustainable development. This program includes a
trip to the Wye Marsh Wind Turbine Station.
Full day program: This program can be made into a full day program
by pairing it with Canoeing, Orienteering, GPS Orienteering, Look…
See… Paint, or Ultimate Survival. (See back of flyer for details)
Introduction to Ecosystems
Science &
Technology: Life Systems: Interactions with Ecosystems
Half day program: Students will investigate biotic and abiotic
components that comprise a variety of ecosystems and food webs. An
overview of habitat, community, producer, consumer and decomposer
is given to illustrate the interactions within an ecosystem. Forest plots
and dip netting will allow students to demonstrate the ways in which
natural communities within ecosystems can change and explain how
such changes can affect animal and plant populations.

Science & Technology: Earth & Space Systems: Water
Systems
Half day program: Students will investigate the importance of fresh
water to the sustainability of life on earth by visiting a wetland.
The distribution and circulation of water will be discussed and a
focus will be drawn on the importance of the marsh as a filtering
system. An interactive game demonstrating the water cycle will be
