2006 Swan Re-Introduction UpdateUpdate – November 2006 2006 - Another successful year in the Swan Re-introduction Program. 2006 saw more Swan tagging than in the previous five years with a total of 31 swans marked and recorded for future research. There was a total of 27 attempted nests in 2006 with 65 cygnets being hatched. Current data shows that out of 14 confirmed nests for the year, 32 cygnets have been recorded to have fledged thus far. This number will undoubtedly rise as recorded sightings will increase over the winter months as the lakes and marshes in our region freeze up and the Swans make their way to the Wye Marsh. The population estimate for the Wye Marsh study area is approximately 160 birds though as stated above this number is expected to rise. Keep an eye on our website for updates! Though a problem in previous years, the Wye Marsh did not treat any swans in 2006 for lead poisoning.
