Trumpeter Swan Re-Introduction Program
Generous People Make a Difference
Establishing and maintaining a healthy population of swans is a costly
and difficult task. The Wye Marsh holds yearly fundraising events in support
of the swan program, and relies on financial contributions by individuals
and organizations.
The professional expertise generously supplied by North Simcoe Veterinary
Services, combined with the aid and care provided for sick and injured
Trumpeters by the Midland OSPCA Wildlife Shelter and the University of
Guelph Wild Bird Clinic, has been essential to maintaining swan health.
The community is also very supportive of the reintroduction effort: volunteers
assist with fundraising, pond maintenance, and monitoring swans within
Wye Marsh, and 'swan spotters' report swans sighted in surrounding areas.
It's amazing to think that fifteen years ago, the Trumpeter was not seen
in this area. We are very lucky to be assisting in the restoration of
a species that was once in danger of extinction. Without the caring and
dedication of the many swan spotters, supporters, and volunteers, the
Wye Marsh Trumpeter swan program would not be where it is today. What
a wondrous experience it is to see the graceful flight of this majestic
bird, and to hear the triumphant territorial call resonating across the
valley.
